Environmental characteristics Knowledge Improvement

The product knowledge is the prerequisite before any action. Nevertheless, even designers hardly knew the environmental product characteristics.

Environmental regulation demands a deeper and deeper knowledge of the product realization processes and of its constituents. The internal need to organize and structure this knowledge is more and more evident. These data collection is a gradual action, in a structured way, thanks to punctual searches but also by the implementation of this data collection within the framework of the Watch Scheme.

The data collection constitutes the first part of the work. It is a means.

The second part is the management and the use of these data. It is the real purpose.

So the thorough action to be led is the adaptation of the Product Data Management Scheme (PDMS) so that it will contain environmental data that may be used by all the product's designers.

Two approaches are possible:

1/ the introduction of additional data in the PDMS,

2/ the development of a specific Environmental Data Management Scheme ( EDMS) parallel to the initial PDMS

Including new data in the PDMS according to environmental concerns has limits. Only some fundamental characteristic can be generally added to the PDMS, for example: constituents' weight, harmful substance presence,...

Then, the implementation of a specific EDMS can be envisaged, for example in the form of index "products cards " and "suppliers cards ". These index cards would collect all the data on a given subject.

There is no definitive or unique solution and adaptable to all the scenarios. An intermediate position between the enlargement of the current PDMS to environmental data and the creation of a specific environmental data management scheme is mostly preferable.

It's up to every company to find the best solution according to its need and mean.
